Solar subsidy and installation: 30 questions answered
Everything homeowners in Kolkata, Howrah and West Bengal ask before going solar.
What is the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana?
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a Government of India scheme that gives central financial assistance (subsidy) to households that install rooftop solar. It is designed to cut household electricity bills sharply, and a typical 3 kW system can generate enough power to cover roughly 300 units a month. Always confirm the latest rules on the official National Portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in).
How much subsidy will I get for rooftop solar?
As per the scheme norms, the central subsidy is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW, capped at ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW and above. In practice: 1 kW = ₹30,000, 2 kW = ₹60,000, 3 kW or more = ₹78,000. Some states or DISCOMs may add their own top-up, so ask our team.
Who is eligible for the rooftop solar subsidy?
Generally, an Indian residential household with its own house, a suitable shadow-free roof, a valid electricity connection and a mobile number linked to the connection can apply. The household should not have taken another solar subsidy for the same roof. Commercial and industrial buildings are not covered by the residential subsidy.
How is the subsidy paid to me?
After installation, net-meter fitting and commissioning inspection, your details and bank account are submitted on the National Portal. The subsidy is credited directly to your bank account (DBT), typically within about a month of the commissioning report being approved. You pay the vendor the net system cost as agreed in your quotation.
What is the cost of a 1 kW, 2 kW and 3 kW solar system?
Indicative prices on this page: 1 kW ≈ ₹72,000, 2 kW ≈ ₹1,28,000, 3 kW ≈ ₹1,80,000 before subsidy. After the government subsidy, the net cost works out to about ₹42,000, ₹68,000 and ₹1,02,000 respectively. Your final price depends on roof type, structure height, cable length, brand and DISCOM requirements, and is confirmed after a free site survey.
How much roof area do I need for solar panels?
Plan on about 100 sq ft of shadow-free roof per kW. So 1 kW needs roughly 100 sq ft, 2 kW about 200 sq ft, 3 kW about 300 sq ft and 5 kW about 500 sq ft. Water tanks, staircase headrooms and nearby buildings that cast shade reduce the usable area.
How many solar panels do I need?
With modern 540 Wp panels, a 1 kW system needs about 2 panels, 2 kW about 4, 3 kW about 6 and 5 kW about 10. The exact count depends on the panel wattage chosen at quotation.
How many units does 1 kW of solar generate in West Bengal?
A well-placed 1 kW rooftop system in West Bengal typically generates around 3.5 to 4 units per day on average, roughly 1,300 to 1,400 units a year. Output is higher in summer and lower during monsoon and heavy cloud. Our estimator uses 3.7 units per kW per day as a conservative figure.
Which solar system size do I need for my electricity bill?
Divide your monthly units by about 110 to get the kW you need. For example, 330 units a month needs about 3 kW; 220 units needs about 2 kW. If you only know your bill in rupees, divide it by your per-unit rate first. Use the “By electricity bill” tab in our estimator for an instant answer.
What is the difference between on-grid, off-grid and hybrid solar?
On-grid systems connect to the DISCOM grid, need no battery, use net metering and qualify for the residential subsidy. Off-grid systems run on batteries without the grid and cost more. Hybrid systems combine grid connection with battery backup, giving you power during outages at a higher upfront cost.
Will my solar system work during a power cut?
A standard on-grid system automatically shuts down during a grid outage for the safety of line workers, so it will not power your home. To run appliances during a power cut you need a hybrid system with a battery, or a separate backup arrangement.
Do I need batteries with rooftop solar?
No. For most homes an on-grid system without batteries is the most economical choice. It uses solar power during the day and sends any extra to the grid. Add batteries only if you face frequent long power cuts and want backup.
What is net metering and how does it work?
Net metering uses a bi-directional meter that records the electricity you export to the grid and the electricity you import. Your bill is calculated on the net units. Extra solar units generated in the day offset what you use at night. Your DISCOM (such as WBSEDCL or CESC) installs and approves the meter, and we assist with the application.
What documents are required to apply for solar?
Usually you need a recent electricity bill, Aadhaar, a passport-size photo, proof of ownership of the property (or NOC from the owner), a cancelled cheque or bank passbook page, and a mobile number linked to your electricity connection. Our team will confirm the exact list at the time of application.
How long does solar installation take?
Physical installation of a home system usually takes 1 to 3 days. The complete process, including registration, feasibility approval, net-meter installation and commissioning, generally takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on your DISCOM.
Can I install solar on a rented or shared roof?
You need the property owner’s written consent or NOC. For shared roofs in multi-owner buildings, permission from co-owners or the society is generally required. Subsidy is linked to the owner of the connection, so the electricity meter should be in the name of the applicant.
Can flats, apartments and housing societies get solar subsidy?
Individual flat owners often do not have exclusive roof rights, so they cannot usually claim the individual household subsidy. Under the scheme, Resident Welfare Associations and Group Housing Societies can get support at ₹18,000 per kW for solar for common facilities such as lifts, lights and pumps, up to a set limit. Contact us to check what applies to your society.
Can solar be installed on a tin shed or sloped roof? What about shade?
Yes. Panels can be mounted on RCC roofs, tin sheds and sloped roofs with the right structure. Shade is the biggest enemy of output, so we check for shadows from tanks, trees and buildings during the site survey and place panels for maximum sunlight.
Does solar work during monsoon and cloudy weather?
Yes, panels still generate on cloudy days, just at lower output. West Bengal receives good annual sunshine, and net metering means the extra units you generate in sunny months help balance the lower generation in the monsoon.
What is the warranty and lifespan of solar panels?
Quality panels typically come with a 25-year performance warranty and can keep producing beyond that. Inverters and workmanship usually carry a shorter warranty, commonly 5 years or more. The exact warranty terms are listed in your quotation.
How much maintenance does a solar system need?
Very little. Clean the panels with plain water every few weeks, more often in dusty seasons, and keep them free of shade. An annual check of wiring, earthing and the inverter is recommended. Our team can arrange maintenance visits.
What is the payback period for rooftop solar?
For homes that claim the subsidy, payback is commonly 3 to 5 years, after which the electricity you generate is essentially free for the remaining life of the system. Your exact payback depends on your tariff, consumption and system cost, which the estimator calculates for you.
What happens to the extra electricity my panels produce?
Any unit you do not use is exported to the grid through the net meter and credited against your consumption as per your DISCOM’s net-metering rules. Your bill is calculated on net units, so surplus in the day reduces your night-time bill.
Can I get a loan for rooftop solar?
Banks have offered collateral-free or concessional-rate loans for residential rooftop solar under the scheme. Terms change from time to time, so check the current interest rate and eligibility with your bank. Our team can guide you on the paperwork.
What are DCR and non-DCR solar panels?
DCR (Domestic Content Requirement) panels use solar cells and modules made in India. The residential subsidy under the scheme requires DCR-compliant modules. Non-DCR panels can be cheaper but do not qualify for the subsidy.
Do you install solar for shops, offices, schools and factories?
Yes. We design commercial and industrial rooftop systems for shops, offices, schools, hospitals and factories. The residential subsidy does not apply to these, but commercial users may benefit from lower running costs and tax benefits such as accelerated depreciation; please confirm with your chartered accountant.
Is the estimate on this page final?
No. The estimator gives an indicative size, price, subsidy and savings using standard assumptions. Your final quotation is prepared after a free site survey that checks roof condition, shade, structure and load, and after confirming the current subsidy rules.
Do you handle the paperwork and subsidy application?
Yes. Our team assists with National Portal registration, application, DISCOM feasibility, installation, net metering, commissioning and the subsidy claim, so you do not have to run between offices.
Which areas do you serve for solar installation?
We serve Kolkata, Howrah, Uluberia, Bagnan, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, Asansol, Durgapur, Haldia and nearby areas in West Bengal. For larger commercial and industrial projects we can also support locations across India.
